When you hear the word “marketing,” is it tough to hold back a cringe or groan? Do images of hucksters and pushy car salesmen jump to the front of your mind and make you want to run in the other direction? Marketing is what many people think of as a necessary evil, but evil doesn’t have to come along for the ride.
Truth is, we market something every day—our ideas and beliefs, food we’ve enjoyed, music we share, movies and TV we love, and books we’ve read. But that’s word of mouth, you say. Yup! Ten points to Gryffindor! Without any marketing, you can’t sell more books than your family and close friends will buy. Without marketing yourself through your platform (I know, another dirty marketing word), no one will know you write books or that you have a story to tell.
Marketing doesn’t have to be sleazy or pushy—in fact, effective marketing isn’t. And you can do it in a way that is comfortable for you.
